Message from the President
Happy New Year!!
On behalf of the EC and TC, I would like to wish you all the best for 2008!
We have an exciting year ahead of us with the Olympics and Paralympics being played out, The Worlds in Gran Canaria and IFDS choosing the boats for the Paralympics 2012 and 2016, but let’s review;
- 2007 was a good year for our Class as we continue to grow and gain more international recognition with many more countries getting interested.
- 2007 was a very busy year for our Paralympic sailors as we close in on the games in Beijing, China. A few sailors have been selected to represent their countries but there are still many who still have to go through the trial process to gain their position.
- We had a very successful World Championships in Kolding, Denmark. Challenging course, tricky winds but the professional Race Committee gave us an incredible series. I believe everyone had a good time, I know I did! Congratulations go out to “Lennart Heselius“for a well sailed and well earned win!
- The World Championship Real Club Nautico de Gran Canaria dates are from October 19th – 26th 2008, with the AGM being held October 18th.
In November 2007, I travelled to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria to meet with Juan Marrero Portugués the President and the Executive of the Real Club Nautico de Gran Canaria (RCNGC) the purpose, of course, to get the Worlds 2008 up and running. The RCNGC is a beautiful and a well endowed club with much history, 100 years this March 15th 2008 to be exact. The RCNGC proudly has on display the many accomplishments that their members have achieved over the past 100 years in international and national sailing events. The most recognised club in Spain! To view the club and amenities just go on line to www.rcngc.com
While I was there, I was able to see the plans and the early parts of construction for the 7.5 million Euro renovation which will really enhance our world championships in October, with new washrooms, showers, launch facilities, docks etc it will truly be a fantastic Worlds. I would encourage everyone to make an effort to attend and enjoy this beautiful part of the world and the hospitality of our hosts. Very shortly there will be information on the RCNGC website giving the Notice of Race, Sponsors, and Hotels etc.
In 2008,
- I look forward to a year of discussion and change as we approach the issue of going One Design.
- I look forward to our ongoing relationship with the IFDS and in keeping the 2.4mR the single person discipline for
the Paralympics for 2012 and 2016 games. - I look forward to seeing most of you during the sailing season and hopefully at the Worlds in Gran Canaria!
- I hope that we continue to enjoy growth and recognition internationally as a very, very unique class within the sailing world.
Again all the best in the new year and lets have some great sailing!
